Direct drive means the pump is mounted straight onto the engine crankshaft with no belts or gearbox in between - fewer moving parts, less to maintain, less weight and a more compact machine that is easier to move around a site. The trade-off, which is worth understanding, is that the pump turns at engine speed, so direct-drive units are built for solid intermittent duty rather than continuous eight-hour running.
