From crate
to first cut.

Most mowers, tractors and utility vehicles arrive close to ready. This page covers the prep, the setup and the first start for each category. Your owner's manual has the final word on every step and every spec.

Each section covers one category: what to have ready, how setup runs, and when to open the manual. Where the manual differs from this page, follow the manual.

Mowers.

Zero turn, riding and walk behind mowers. Setup is mostly bolt-on parts, fluids and safety checks.

A flat, hard surface with room to work on all sides. A driveway or garage floor works well; soft grass makes it hard to move a heavy riding mower off its pallet or shipping frame.
Fresh fuel in a clean can, in the type and octane the manual lists. Check the manual for the ethanol limit before you fill the tank.
Engine oil in the grade printed in the manual, plus a funnel and rags. Some units ship with oil in the crankcase and some ship dry, so read the dipstick before adding any.
A tire pressure gauge and a helper. Zero turn and riding mowers are heavy, and two people make handling the seat, deck and pallet safer.

Unpack and inspect
Cut the straps, remove the carton or crate, and check the mower, deck, seat, keys and manual against the parts list. Look over the deck, tires, hoses and body panels for transport damage. Photograph anything that looks wrong and call us before you start the engine.
Fit the loose parts
Depending on the model, you may need to fit the seat, steering wheel, control levers, ROPS bar or walk behind handle. Use the hardware bag that ships with the unit and tighten each fastener to the torque in the manual. On zero turns, raise the ROPS and lock both pins.
Fluids, battery and tires
Check engine oil on the dipstick and fill to the mark, not above it. Add fuel. Connect the battery, positive cable first, and tighten both terminals. Set tire pressure to the figure on the sidewall or in the manual; uneven pressure gives an uneven cut.
Safety checks and first start
On zero turns, return the transmission bypass levers to drive if they were set to push for shipping. Start with the parking brake set and blades off. EFI (electronic fuel injection) engines start without a choke; carbureted engines may need one. Confirm the seat switch works as the manual describes, drive off the pallet with the deck raised, then level the deck.

Outdoor.

Lawn tractors and full size Gator XUV utility vehicles. Both arrive mostly assembled, and both are heavy enough to need a plan for getting off the pallet.

Clear a path from the delivery spot to where the machine will be stored. A full size Gator XUV is wide and long, so measure your gate and garage door against the dimensions on the product page.
Loading ramps rated for the machine's weight, or a firm, level spot to drive down onto. Never roll a utility vehicle off a pallet edge onto soft ground.
Fluids in the grades the manual lists: engine oil, fuel, coolant for liquid-cooled engines, and brake and transmission fluid for utility vehicles. Have them on hand before delivery day.
A socket set, battery terminal wrench and tire gauge. Batteries are often disconnected for transport and need to be connected and tightened before the first start.

Inspect on arrival
Walk around the machine before it leaves the pallet. Check the hood, fenders, cargo box, tires and lights for damage, and match the keys, manual and loose parts to the packing list. Photograph the serial plate for your records.
Assemble what shipped loose
Lawn tractors may need the steering wheel, seat or deck linkage fitted. Utility vehicles may need mirrors or the cargo box gate attached. Follow the assembly order in the manual and torque each bolt to its listed value.
Fluids, battery, tires
Check engine oil, coolant if fitted, and the transmission and brake fluid levels on the Gator XUV. Add fuel. Connect the battery, positive first. Set every tire to the pressure in the manual; utility vehicles often run different pressures front and rear.
First drive
Start with the parking brake on and let the engine idle while you check for leaks. Test brakes, steering, lights and reverse at walking speed on flat ground. On lawn tractors, engage the deck once while stopped to confirm the blades start and stop cleanly. Keep early use light, as the manual's break-in section directs.

Tractors.

Compact tractors usually take more setup than a mower. Plan a few hours, and mount the loader or implements only after the tractor itself is ready.

Level concrete or packed gravel with open space in front. If a front loader ships separately, you need room to drive straight into its mounting frame.
Diesel or gas as the engine requires, plus engine oil, hydraulic or transmission fluid and coolant in the grades the manual lists. Many compact tractors share one fluid between hydraulics and transmission.
An engine hoist, forklift or two helpers for heavy parts such as the ROPS frame, loader or rear implement. Do not lift these alone.
A grease gun with multipurpose grease. Loader pivots, the front axle and the three-point hitch have fittings that should be greased before first use.

Unpack and assemble
Remove straps and packing, then check the tractor and every loose part against the list. Raise the ROPS to its upright position and pin it. Fit the steering wheel, seat and any mirrors or lights, torquing hardware to the manual's values.
Fluids, battery and tires
Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic or transmission fluid and front axle oil, and top up where needed. Fuel with clean fuel of the right type. Connect the battery. Set tire pressures to the manual; turf, ag and industrial tires each run different numbers.
Mount the loader or implement
With the engine off and hydraulic pressure relieved, drive into the loader frame, set the pins and connect the hydraulic lines. For three-point implements, attach the lower links first, then the top link, and set the sway limiters. Grease every fitting.
First start and break-in
Start, idle a few minutes, and look for leaks. Cycle the loader, three-point hitch, PTO, brakes, 4WD and range selector through their full travel. Drive off in low range. Follow the manual's break-in schedule and first service interval exactly.

More to shop.

Pool equipment, pressure washers and snow blowers. Setup is lighter, but each has its own checks before first use.

Robotic pool cleaners, such as Dolphin units, need a grounded GFCI outlet placed the distance from the water that the manual specifies. Skip extension cords unless the manual allows one.
Pressure washers need a water supply that meets the pump's flow rating, a kink-free garden hose, and oil and fuel for gas models. Compare the GPM figure in the manual with what your spigot delivers.
Snow blowers need engine oil, fresh fuel and a dry place to fit the handle and chute. Set them up before the first snowfall, not during it.

Pool cleaners
Unpack the robot, cable, power supply and caddy if included, and make sure the filters are seated. Set the power supply on a flat, dry surface away from the pool edge, connect the cable, and lower the robot in slowly so trapped air escapes before it reaches the floor. Run one full cycle, then check the filter.
Pressure washers
Fit the handle, gun and high-pressure hose. On gas models, add oil and fuel. Connect the garden hose, turn the water on fully, and squeeze the trigger to purge air before starting. Never run the pump dry. Start with the widest nozzle and keep the spray away from people, pets and soft surfaces.
Snow blowers
Unfold and bolt the handle, attach the chute and control cables, and adjust the cables so each control engages fully. Add oil and fuel, check tire pressure and shear pins, and start the engine outdoors. Test the auger and drive controls before the first storm.

Tools for setup day.

Socket and wrench set
SAE and metric sizes for seat, handle, ROPS and steering wheel hardware, plus battery terminals.
Torque wrench
Many fasteners on tractors and mowers have a listed torque. Too loose and they back out; too tight and threads strip.
Low-pressure tire gauge
Mower and tractor tires run low pressures that a standard car gauge reads poorly. Correct pressure keeps the deck level.
Funnel, rags, drain pan
For oil, fuel and hydraulic fluid. A spill on a new engine or deck is easier to prevent than to clean.
Grease gun
Loaded with multipurpose grease for loader pins, front axles and any mower spindles with fittings.
Box cutter and snips
For straps, banding and stretch wrap. Cut away from the machine so you do not scratch paint or nick a hose.
Rated loading ramps
For driving mowers, tractors and utility vehicles down from a pallet or trailer. Check the weight rating against the machine.
Lifting help
A second person, hoist or forklift for ROPS frames, loaders and heavy decks that are unsafe to handle alone.
Safety gear
Gloves and safety glasses for unpacking, closed-toe boots, and hearing protection for the first start.

Rather hand it to someone else?

If you would rather not do the setup yourself, these are the usual routes. Call us first and we can explain what the job involves for your model, so you can brief whoever does the work.

A local outdoor power shop
Independent small-engine and mower shops assemble and service riding mowers, zero turns and compact tractors. Ask for a setup quote and bring the owner's manual.
A licensed electrician
For any new outdoor outlet a pool cleaner or electric pressure washer needs. GFCI protection near water is a code requirement in most places.
A pool service technician
If you already use a pool service, they can set up a robotic cleaner and show you how to clean the filters and store the cable.
